This new self-study, ISO 9001:2000—Making the Transition, is designed as a practical handbook for managers whose organizations are certified to the 1994 ISO 9001, ISO 9002, or ISO 9003 quality management systems (QMS). Managers and staff who are ready to plan their transition to ISO 9001:2000 will find that, unlike the old 20-part standard that was frequently over-documented, the new quality management standard consists of eight sections, only six of which require documentation. Because the new QMS has many parallels with ISO 14001, the environmental management system (EMS) standard published in 1996, it will be easier to integrate the two systems throughout business practices and the entire organization.

This course will provide you with a practical explanation of how to plan, revise, and apply the new quality standard through exercises and text. You will be guided in these changes through systematic workshop questions and exercises, allowing you to begin outlining your new QMS as you proceed through the course.

We are including an explanation of Deming’s plan-do-check-act cycle and his fourteen points of transformation which were integral to many quality systems for years before the first ISO 9000 standard was signed off in the late 80s. His concepts were not specifically referred to in the 1994 editions of the standards, but are central to ISO 9001:2000.

Annette Dennis McCully has been a science journalist and technical writer for 15 years, conducting interviews of corporate, governmental, and military officials for articles, case studies, and industry reports. Debra L. Reese has worked in the quality sector of the semiconductor industry for 28 years. During this time, she has held several positions, including JANM38510 Program Manager, Site Audit Manager, R/QA Staff Engineer, and ISO 9002/14001 Program Director and ISO 9001/14001 Systems Consultant. She achieved the first site certification to ISO 14001 in the State of Washington in 1997 with a fully integrated ISO9002/14001 set of systems. Reese has spoken about her work with management systems at several environmental and quality conferences in Washington and Oregon in the last few years.

Reese has worked with Fairchild, National, and Matsushita Semiconductor Corporation of America, all in Washington state. She continues her work with the semiconductor industry as a consultant in quality, safety, health, and environmental issues to Microchip Technology through Environmental Assessment Services, Inc. in Tacoma, Washington.
